Shield
The shield is blue for Infantry and bastion with sentry box that raises from the sea, which is represented by the barry wavy base, represents the 296th Infantry on the island of Puerto Rico, bravely defending the island. The motto was the reply of sentinels when questioned as to alertness by officers of the guard during tours of inspection.
Crest
The crest is that of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard.
The coat of arms was approved on 25 January 1941.
